MODFLOW and More 2024:

“AI, Global Change, and the Future of Groundwater Modeling”

Welcome everyone.  The 12th rendition of the MODFLOW-and-More (MF&M) conference convened in 2022 at Princeton University and was a great success, and Princeton is again our home for the 2024 conference. For nearly three decades, the MF&M conference series has provided a vibrant forum for researchers, developers, practitioners, and regulators in the groundwater modeling community to convene, share experiences, and propagate ideas. Meanwhile, press coverage of matters related to groundwater has historically been occasional at best, at times leading those of us “in the business” to wonder whether our contributions and efforts mattered.

How times have changed, and no more so than in the last two years. The study, management, and implications of groundwater availability and quality are the subject of multiple series of articles in the New York Times (NYT) and on National Public Radio (NPR), among other venues, with alarming taglines such as “America Is Using Up Its Groundwater Like There’s No Tomorrow” (NYT: August, 2023). Consequently, the topics raised at past MF&M conferences have only grown in relevance, import, and urgency.

Approaching the 2024 conference, groundwater has taken center-stage, and attendees will witness in-person presentations on wide-ranging topics and engage with leaders in the groundwater modeling community in the awe-inspiring surroundings of Princeton University. A responsibility has befallen the groundwater community to collectively determine how we can build on our technical foundations and the centuries of cumulative experience and expertise that will be present at the 2024 conference to provide the very best services to our communities. There is no better time to be actively engaged in the groundwater sciences, and no better place to do it than at Princeton in June 2024! We look forward to seeing you! Conference registration prices will increase after May 15 so submit your registration today.

Prepare for this year’s conference by reading the upcoming Special Issue of Groundwater (available soon via this link Groundwater – Wiley Online Library) containing selected articles from the 2022 MF&M Conference!
